About the Shot
San Giorgio Maggiore and Gondolas, Venice. In her book on Venice, Jan Morris mentions a nineteenth-century Frenchman who said that “Other cities have admirers. Only Venice has lovers.” I know what he means: Venice has no rivals in terms of sensual beauty and allure. And it is not only humans who love the place — cameras swoon as well. This photo was taken at sunrise during the Carnival in 2011, with the Doge’s Palace behind and looking out towards San Giorgio Maggiore.
