About the Shot
Wheat nearing harvest is lit in the front by the sun while a massive black thundercloud on the horizon looms nearby. Thunder rolls in the distance.
This is one of those images that I'll never forget the circumstances behind.
I was driving through the Palouse near harvest season, and was hoping to capture some lighting as the light levels were dropping. As I rounded a corner, I noticed that there was a high stand of wheat that was being front lit by the low sun while the storm cell was directly ahead. It was a lighting situation I have not seen repeated in a similar fashion since that day. I made this image on 120 film on the Mamiya RZ 67 Pro II while standing in the bed of my truck with the tripod legs at max height.
