A jockey rides astride a harness strapped to two bulls participate in a bull race called 'pacu jawi' in West Sumatera, Indonesia. The race is held after a rice harvest season. The bulls and the jockey will race across a wet rice field and will be judged not on speed but on the action and riding style displayed by the jockey. The headman of the villages normally become the judges. Villages in the region take part in this event and different villages will host the event at different times of the year between the rice harvest and replanting periods. A winning jockey is the pride and joy and a celebrated hero at the village. His bulls will fetch a premium price in the market if sold.
